Human Microbiome Study Unveils Strong Links Between Diet, Gut Microbes, Metabolic Health

Abstract

Maintaining a healthy intestinal microbiota is important for health, since alterations in balance are associated with the development of different pathologies. Thus, this study shows the relationship between diet, microbiota and the risk of suffering from diet-related metabolic diseases (diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, etc.). The researchers applied blood chemistry profiling and metagenomics techniques to uncover a panel of 15 gut microorganisms associated with higher risks (and 15 with higher risks) for a number of common diseases. So they suggested that their results could be used to provide personalized dietary advice for better health, based on the gut microbiome.
